The 10 year follow-up study in 2005 of her PhD, Powerless places and placeless powers: the (re) shaping of human services organisations, 1984 - 1997 highlighted major syntheses of the impact of cumulative managerialistic and economic rationalist reforms on government and nonprofit organisations. She is a specialist third (nonprofit) sector researcher and was a co-researcher on the 1996 National Contracting for Care Project. From 2006 she is Managing Editor of Third Sector Review and acts as reviewer for Voluntas (International journal) and Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly (American journal).
